The first pieces from art collector and philanthropist Elie Hirschfeld’s extraordinary donation have arrived at the New York Historical Society, and the museum has announced that these pieces will go on view this month. 'Scenes of New York City,’ the entire collection being gifted by Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, will go on view in October.

Familiar New York City scenes are depicted throughout the collection, many of which will be recognizable to today's New Yorkers. Pieces available for early viewing include Early Spring, Washington Square, by William James Glackens (c. 1910); Foggy Night, New York, by George Luks (c. 1900–1930); The Boat Harbor (Gowanus Pier), by William Merritt Chase (1888); and Dredging in the East River, by John Henry Twachtman (1879).

When Elie Hirschfeld’s full collection arrives at the musuem, viewers will see who’s who of 19th- to 21st-century artists, including Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Isabel Bishop, Christo, Stuart Davis, Keith Haring, Jacob Lawrence, Sol Lewitt, Louise Nevelson, Norman Rockwell, and Andy Warhol, and many more.

The full exhibition will be accompanied by Scenes of New York City: The Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld Collection, a fully-illustrated, 336 page catalogue, co-published by D. Giles Limited in February 2022.
