Elie Hirschfeld's 'Scenes of New York City' Available for Preview Viewing in February

Giorgio de Chirico, Interno metafisico a Manhattan, 1972 The first pieces from  art collector  and philanthropist  Elie Hirschfeld ’s extraordinary donation have arrived at the  New York Historical Society , and the museum has announced that these pieces will go on view this month. 'Scenes of New York City,’ the entire collection being gifted by Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld, will go on view in October.  Familiar  New York City  scenes are depicted throughout the collection, many of which will be recognizable to today's New Yorkers. Pieces available for early viewing include Early Spring, Washington Square, by William James Glackens (c. 1910); Foggy Night, New York, by George Luks (c. 1900–1930); The Boat Harbor (Gowanus Pier), by William Merritt Chase (1888); and Dredging in the East River, by John Henry Twachtman (1879). 'Scenes of New York City' Gifted by Elie Hirschfeld to NYHS

Early Spring, William James Glackens, 1910 Philanthropist and art collector  Elie Hirschfeld  has announced the donation a significant collection of  artworks  to the  New York Historical Society . Scenes of New York City  contains 130 pieces representing  New York City-based artists and art historical movements, from the 19th through the 21st centuries.  Artists  such as Edward Hopper, Louise Nevelson, Andy Warhol, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Rockwell, Marc Chagall, David Hockney, and Georgia O'Keeffe, are all represented, among many others. The collection is comprised of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper in a variety of media, and will expand the collection of the  New York Historical Society  with 82 artists and multiple artistic periods not currently represented. 

Elie Hirschfeld 130-Piece Art Collection

 Elie Hirschfeld’s  New York-themed art collection , recently donated to the  New York Historical Society , will be available for preview beginning February 12, with the full collection planned for a Fall show.  Scenes of New York City  is comprised of  130 works  and features drawings, paintings, and mixed media. Artists and movements represented are associated particularly with New York City, and range from the 19th through 21st Centuries. Keith Haring, Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Willem de Kooning, Sol LeWitt, Louise Nevelson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warhol are all represented, among many others.  “As we get closer to  Scenes of New York City  opening at New-York Historical in the fall, Sarah and I are delighted to present these first works to the general public,” said  Elie Hirschfeld . “These paintings in particular provide a unique glimpse of life in New York City in the late 19th and early 20th century that New Yorkers will still recognize.” Dredging in the East

 Elie Hirschfeld has long been passionate about athletics and competition. He spent 25 years as a competitive triathlete, and, at 71 years old, continues a routine of training and racing today.  From its inception, Elie identified athletics as one of the Elie Hirschfeld Foundation 's key areas of philanthropy, making contributions to various organizations that promote awareness and opportunity in the area of athletics, particularly among young people.  Elie Hirschfeld's athletic ability was the subject of a recent mention in the Wall Street Journal , in an article offering insights on building better fitness habits.
